William "Bill" Elmer Hanson, 90, of Ames and formerly of Clarion, died July 31, 2013 at Bickford Cottage in Ames following a lengthy decline in health. Funeral services will be at Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland Monday, August 5 at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow in the Roland Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

Bill was born on October 14, 1922 in Roland, Iowa to C. Elmer and Amy Berdella (Swenson) Hanson. He grew up on a farm north of Roland. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He married Dorothy Larson on June 22, 1948. He graduated from Iowa State University, Ames with an Industrial Arts degree and later returned for his masters degree. He taught industrial arts and driver's education at Clarion High School from 1950 to 1984, when he retired from teaching, but continued to teach summer driver's ed. for many more years. In his 50 years of teaching driver's ed., he taught over 3,300 students and 160 adults.

Bill and Dorothy lived in Clarion until moving to Ames in 2012. He enjoyed photography, and worked for Mueller's Studio as a part-time photographer for 20 years and was a member of the Fort Dodge Camera Club. He was a lifelong motorcycle enthusiast, and he also enjoyed fishing, traveling with their trailer, and camping. They wintered in Florida for many years.

He is survived by Dorothy, his wife of 65 years; two sons, Randy and his wife Joan of Eden Prairie, MN and Michael and his wife Jane of Baxter, Iowa; 5 grandchildren, Sara, Corey, Katie, Jared, and Nicole. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Christopher Hanson.
