Constantino Peter "Dean" Vurnakes, 58, of Hopewell passsed away Friday, January 14, 2011, at MCV Medical Center.
Dean was preceded in death by his wife, Valerie Kolidakis Vurnakes, his parents, Peter Gus and Mary Davis Vurnakes of Fayetteville, NC and mother-in-law, Despina (Loula) Kolidakis of Hopewell, VA.
Mr. Vurnakes enjoyed his family and friends, boating and was an avid motorcyclist. Dean's quick whit, smile and laughter would light up a room. He was employed by the U. S. Government at Fort Lee in Internet technology and a full time honors student at John Tyler Community College, a member of Saint Elpis Greek Orthodox Church and was very active, holding many offices and leadership positions, an AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational and Progressive Association) member since 1978, holding every office in the local chapter, a partner in Piccolo's Restaurant from 1977 to 1990, a district manager with Wendy's in Richmond, VA. for many years and previous owner of Old Dominion Wireless.
He is survived his son, Steve C. Vurnakes and his wife, Sasha of Auburn, Maine; brother, Bill Vurnakes(Julie) of Fayetteville, NC; sisters, Hedy Thevaos (Jim) of Greensboro, NC and Angie Vurnakes of Raleigh, NC; father-in-law, George Kolidakis of Hopewell, VA.; best friend, Spiro Georgogianis, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 10:00 am in the Saint Elpis Greek Orthodox Church with Father Jon Emanuelson officiating. Interment will be in Merchants Hope Memorial Gardens.
