Robert F. Scanlon – age 78, of Knoxville, passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 2, 2009, surrounded by family at St. Mary's Hospice.

Bob was born February 22, 1931 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering from Carnegie Mellon Institute, he worked for several engineering companies before moving to Knoxville, Tennessee in 1964. He is a founding member of Saint John Neumann Catholic Church, where he remained active, participating in many roles with his church.

Bob also served in the U.S. Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserves from 1952 to 1960. He was nationally known for his expertise and love of streetcars, trains and antique buses, and was the project manager for the Knoxville streetcar renovation now on display at the East Tennessee History Center. Bob was also an active member and past president of the West Knoxville Civitan Club.

He is preceded in death by parents, Robert C. and Alice Mae Scanlon, his sister, Alice ‘Pud' Jansky.

He is survived by wife of 46 years, June J. Scanlon; daughter, Maureen L. Bosch and husband Donald A. Bosch; daughter, Dr. Kathleen A. Scanlon; son, Jeffrey Scanlon and wife Amy B. Scanlon and his five grandchildren, Matthew, Lauren, Adam, Hannah and Natalie.

During his illness, Bob and his family were especially appreciative of Dr. Dan Ibach and Trish Norman, hospice care provider Pat Hungate, and all of the nurses and staff at St. Mary's Hospice.

The family will receive friends on Friday, December 4, 2009, at Saint John Neumann Catholic Church, from 4 p.m. until the time of Mass at 6:30 p.m. with Father John Dowling celebrant. Private graveside services for the family will be held on Saturday morning, at Highland Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Saint John Neumann Catholic Church Building Fund, 645 Saint John Court, Farragut, TN 37934.
