Cox's Pond Claims Life Of Earl Padgett, Jr. - Body of 15 Year - Old Son Of Rev. E. F. Padgett Rescued By Patrolman - [Picture of Boy] - The icy waters of Cox's Pond claimed the life of young Earl F. Padgett, Jr., who was drowned there Sunday afternoon about 2 pm while taking a swim with a boy companion. - The 15 year old son of the Rev. Earl F. Padgett, Sr., whose residence is two miles west of Atco, in the Sugar Valley section, had gone to the pond with a neighbor companion, Lee Roy Childers, for an afternoon swim. Shortly after entering the water, young Padgett ventured into the pond where the water was at a depth of approximately six feet and almost immediately began crying for help. The Childers boy, not a capable swimmer himself, set out immediately for help. He ran all the way to the Lindsey Gilstrap home, a distance of nearly two miles, and telephoned the State Patrol and an ambulance. State Patrolmen H. R. Daugherty and C. W. Haley arrived on the scene shortly lifted the body from the water and administered artificial respiration to no effect. The rescuers estimated the body had been under water for a period of some forty minutes. The boy's father is an employee of the Goodyear plant at Atco, and is a most highly respected citizen of Bartow County. Young Padgett was a member of the Zion Hill Baptist church. Surviving besides the parents are two sisters, Mrs. Oscar Cochran and Miss Bettie Joe Padgett, of Cartersville, Messrs. Lee, Paul, Ernest and Oscar Padgett, are uncles of the young man; while Mrs. G. M. Jones, and Mrs. Frank James are his aunts. Mrs. J. L. Padgett is the boy's grandmother, and Sheriff George Gaddis is a cousin of Rev. Padgett. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Zion Hill Baptist church with the Rev. J. A. McPherson conducting the rites, assisted by the Rev. Guy N. Atkinson and George V. Crow. Interment in Zion Hill cemetery. Active Pallbearers were O. G. Padgett, E. A. Padgett, J. A. Padgett, E. W. Keith, R. C. Keith, R. L. Keith, Lee Padgett, Paul Padgett, Griffin Keith and Sheriff George Gaddis. Owen Funeral Home in charge of funeral arrangements.

In Memory - Earl F. Padgett, Jr. - A Boy with a Broad Smile - This poem was written by a friend and dedicatd to Earl F. Padgett, Jr., on his birthday, May 6. E. F. was a boy so kind and true, One we loved as you all knew. But he has gone the last long mile, The boy that wore a big broadsmile. He never met us but what he would say. "Good morning" "Howdy" orjust "Hey" That was not all. Oh, that child Always had a great big smile. We loved his nature, we loved his grace. And no one here can take his place. We'll miss him yes, all the while, The boy tat owre a broad, broad smile. We know not why he had to go, But God in heaven would have it so. He sent His angels for the child,....oops...didn't get the remainder.
