Houston real estate developer Ronald Jack "Ronny" Finger died at home Tuesday of complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease. He was 61.

After being diagnosed with the illness in April 1998, Finger established the MDA / ALS Research Center at Baylor College of Medicine with his wife, Linda. They also sponsored the medical school's Lupus Research Center.

Born in Houston to Hyman and Bessie Kaplan Finger, he graduated in 1960 from the University of Texas and served as a lieutenant in the Navy.

In 1963, he joined his brother Marvey in The Finger Cos., a major developer of real estate and multifamily housing.

During the 1970s, he was president of the Houston and Texas apartment associations and vice president of the National Apartment Association.
.
In 1997, Mayor Bob Lanier appointed Finger to the Houston Housing Authority Board and he served as its president.
.
He had also been a board member of the Museum of Natural Science, Houston Symphony Society, Salvation Army, Anti-Defamation League, Houston Area Women's Center, Communities in Schools, and Congregation Beth Israel.

He was also a member of the Urban Land Institute council and the River Oaks Rotary Club.

Ronald Finger is survived by his wife, Linda; children, Scott of Houston, Jan Geniesse of Los Angeles and Cristina Bauss of Houston; brothers, Jerry and Marvey, both of Houston.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Congregation Beth Israel, 5600 N. Braeswood, with private burial.
