Rescue: Pop, 325. In southeast area near Jame. Earlier name, Smith's Neck, from land grant to William Smith in 1645. One explanation of present name: first postmaster, William T. Carter, given privilege of naming postoffice. Man riding a mule had been bringing mail from a distant postoffice. Carter; statement was" "The mail was rescued from the mule's back." Another explanation was the Methodists established a church; the founders stressed that they were rescuing people from sin.
