5 May 1981: Daniel was the owner of Bittner's Jewelry Store, 515 Lehman St., for over 40 years, and was born in Lebanon, the son of the Late Frank and Katie Speck Bittner. He enjoyed the jewelry business, and once said his store had been good to him because of the friendly nature of the people of Lebanon, one relative said. He worshiped in the Lutheran faith. As one of the founders of the Northside Civic League, he served as its only president until February of this year. The group, founded in 1948, was originally created to put up Christmas lights on the northside of town, and later was expanded to other areas. While he served as president, the membership grew from 17 to 300 persons. His civic involvement led him to become vice chairman of the Lebanon County Housing and redevelopment Authority. He was a 12-year member of the board. He received the Lebanon Lions Club's Good Neighbor award from Judge John A. Walter in 1977. He was a 50-year member of the Mount Lebanon Lodge 226 F&AM, and was a member of the Harrisburg Consistory and the Zembo Shrine, Harrisburg. He served as president of the Lebanon County Shrine Club in 1958. He was also a member of the Hermit Commandry, in which he was a trustee; the Knights Templar; the Weidle Royal Arch Chapter; the Quittabahilla Forest 25, Tall Cedars of Lebanon; the Izaak Walton League (animals and wildlife); and the Weavertown Liberty and Friendship Fire companies.
