Howard Max Baker, 83, of rural Altamont, died at 9:30 a.m., Monday, February 19, 2007, at the Good Samaritan Center in Parsons.
He was born January 9, 1924, to Wilford and Jessie (Kugler) Baker on his father's home place two miles north of Altamont. He attended his first years of school at Baleu country school. He attended his eighth grade in town and graduated from Altamont High School in 1942.
During World War II he served in the Navy Coast Guard and the Merchant Marines. Following his discharge, he traveled extensively while working as a heavy equipment operator for more than 50 years. On March 25, 1947, he and Lois VanCleave were united in marriage at the First Baptist Church in Coffeyville. They first made their home in Cherryvale for 18 years before moving to their farm north of Altamont in October 1971. She survives of the home.
He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local No. 101 of Kansas City, Missouri, the Altamont Masonic Lodge No. 69 A.F. & A.M. for over 50 years, the Royal Arch and Masonic Council Lodges of Independence. He also served on the Cherryvale school board for several years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 22, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Altamont. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont with Masonic Burial Rites given by the Altamont Lodge No. 69 A.F. & A.M. The family will receive friends from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 21, 2007, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont.
