Gertrude Cooley, 93, died Monday, November 24, 2008, at a health care facility in Hattiesburg. She had been a resident of Laurel since 1999 moving there from Avon Park, Fla.Graveside services were held also on Wednesday, November 26, at Cycadia Cemetery in Tarpon Springs, Fla. with Pastor Billy Harrell officiating.Mrs. Cooley was a member of Mt. Vernon Congregational Methodist Church in Laurel.She was very active in her church, loved teaching Sunday school and was a longtime supporter of missionaries and charitable organizations. She enjoyed quilting and was an exceptional seamstress, she loved to travel and read.She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John Cooley.She is survived by her close friends for over 50 years, Billy and Elladean Harrell, who cared for her for the last nine years of her life. Also three nephews, James (Carolyn) Peck of Cleveland, Tennessee, Frank (Shirley) Peck of Chester, Montana and Henry Peck of Alaska.In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Harrell Hispanic Ministries, P.O. Box 9, Florence, Miss. 39073.Visitation was held Wednesday in the Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home in Sebring, Fla., which is in charge of the arrangements.
