Helen "Bootsie" Groover Calhoun

Columbus, Georgia- Helen "Bootsie" Groover Calhoun, died this day, March 9, 2013 at age 100. She died peacefully under the loving care of St. Francis Hospital. Graveside services are scheduled at Riverdale Cemetery on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, 3 p.m., with Reverend (Dr.) P. Shane Green officiating, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, Georgia.
Helen was born in Roswell, Georgia on August 22, 1912, the daughter of the late Mary Southeran Smith and Marshall Eugene Groover. She graduated from LaGrange High School in 1930. Later attended nurses training school at Columbus City Hospital 1930-1933, graduating with RN certification. From 1951-1979 she was employed by Town and Country, later Casual Corner. "Bootsie" was a long time member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Otis Calhoun, Sr.; and a brother, Marshall Eugene Groover, Jr. MD and his wife, Katie of Jacksonville, Florida. She is survived by her devoted son, Colonel (USAF Ret) Cecil Otis Calhoun, Jr; her sister, Winifred Groover McDuffie and her husband Bruce McDuffie of Chattanooga, Tennessee; her brother, Colonel (USAF Ret) Charles W. Groover and his wife Jacqueline of Lakemont, Georgia; granddaughter, Courtney Calhoun Blackmar and her husband Alfred Owen Blackmar; grandson, Scott Philip Calhoun and his wife Tiffany Gray Calhoun; great-grandchildren, Phillip Owen Blackmar, Mary Ellen Blackmar, Helen Constance Calhoun, and Emma Elizabeth Calhoun; devoted caregiver, Precious Ferguson; many other relatives and friends.
