Long-time San Pedro resident Gilbert E Bechtol passed away Aug 27, 2012 from natural causes at the age of 88.
Gil was born on March 10, 1924 in Eureka, Utah. He was the son of a coal miner, Charles Bechtol and music teacher, Elizabeth Evans Bechtol. Gil enlisted in the U.S. Marines during WWII, and earned an officer's commission. He continued to serve in the Marine Corps Reserve for 8 more years. Forever grateful to the G.I. Bill, Gil graduated from the University of Utah with his B.S. in civil engineering. He moved to Southern California after graduation to work for the U.S. Geological Survey. During this time he met and married Mary Ellen Grabski. Together they had seven children. While raising his young family, he earned his Master's Degree in public administration from USC. Following his position as senior civil engineer with the city of Los Angeles, Gil entered the private sector, beginning with McIntire Quiros, during which time he oversaw the development of the Mauna Kea Resort on the big island of Hawaii, and the Westlake Village project. Gil then became president of Genge Industries in Los Angeles before partnering with Jim Emerson to form Bechtol Emerson Engineering. Their firm had significant engineering projects such as the land site development for the J Paul Getty Museum in Brentwood, Calif. Gil was honored to have had Bechtol Canyon named after him at this time. Gil earned substantial respect in and outside of his profession through his forthright but humble personality. His professional affiliations included: the American Society of Civil Engineers, Chi Epsilon, and the California Council of Civil Engineers Land Surveyors.
He enjoyed his large family, jazz music, reading, and following NFL football. In retirement, he took up jogging and volunteering for the Los Angeles Maritime Museum in San Pedro. He is survived by his children, Nancy Andrews, Helen Jensen (Kim), Jean Brooks (Greg), Karen Rich (George), Marian Stavros (Tony) and John Bechtol (Marta), 17 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. God blessed us with a wonderful father, who is now with his dearly-loved wife, Mary Ellen, and his son, Chuck.
Services to be held at Green Hills Memorial Park Chapel, Friday, August 31, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Los Angeles Maritime Museum Foundation, Berth 84, San Pedro, CA 90731.
