Col. Maritzen earned the Legion of Merit; Air Force Commendation Medal; American Defense Service Medal; Victory Medal, World War II; National Defense Service Medal; Korean War Medal; Air Force Longevity Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the United Nations Service Medal. During his World War II career, he was an Aide for General Butler and he served as a squadron commander and flew numerous missions as Command Pilot/Bombardier in Strategic Air Command (SAC) on the B-29 Bomber and retired as the Base Commander of Oxnard AFB, Camarillo, CA. Colonel Maritzen, during the Vietnam War, served in the Pacific Air Force (PACAF) Command Headquarters in Hawaii.

Survived by his daughter; a sister; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
