Grace Mary Culley, of Gales Ferry, died Sunday, February 14, 2010 at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, New London. She was born on September 17, 1926 in Glengarnock, Scotland, the daughter of John and Grace Daly.

While serving in the British Women's Army during World War II, Grace met and married Jim Culley of Stonington, CT, who was serving in the American Army Air Corps in England. They were married on May 24, 1945 at the Church of Scotland in Glengarnock, Scotland.

After immigrating to the United States, Grace became a Secretary at the former Admiral Billard Academy in New London. She was also a Legal Secretary for Atty. Aaron E. Elfenbein in New London for 16 years. Grace proudly became an American Citizen on March 11, 1954.

Grace was an avid ballet dancer, taking classes and performing locally for many years. She started the Grace Culley School of Ballet in her home in Gales Ferry in the 1970"s and taught the art of dance to hundreds of girls until her retirement in 2007.

She is survived by her husband, James Culley; a sister, Andrena Hendry of Beith, Scotland; a son, Donald Culley and his wife, Kari, of Gales Ferry; two grandchildren, Andrew and Lauren Culley of Gales Ferry; a daughter, Karen Culley, and her husband, Richard Tyrrell of Seneca, SC; and a niece and three nephews in Scotland and England. A brother predeceased her, John Daly of Beith, Scotland.

A graveside service will be held at the Gales Ferry Cemetery at 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, February 24, 2010.
