Letter from Marie (Hillen Risse) 12/25/1999:
She confirmed her brother Henry was in the High School Class of 1936. Henry died suddenly from a heart attack. He wasn't sick that I know of and he wasn't under a doctor's care. They were living in Linn, MO at the time of his death, but they lived in Meta a long time after they married.

Henry worked in the Ford Garage in Meta, as a bookkeeper, until it closed and then he went to work for the Chevrolet Garage, until it closed and moved to Jefferson City. Henry and his wife then moved to Linn and he got the job teaching at Linn Technical College until he died. I don't know if Mary (his wife) quit teaching after they moved to Linn or not for they didn't come around much.

I don't have any date of Mary's birth. The date of their marriage is correct. They were married in St. Louis, and that was where Mary was from. I wasn't at the wedding. They had 2 children John & Robert. I never see them, for they don't come around. Mary is deceased, she had cancer, and died a couple of months or so before my husband, Leo, died. I don't have any obituary from her death.

THE META FIRE DEPARTMENT:
About 1951 the people of the Meta community and the surrounding rural area saw the need for fire protection equipment. Through the effort and leadership of the Civic League, a used Ford truck chassis was purchased, and the Central Fire Truck Co. of St. Louis, MO., built the truck into a complete fire fighting unit, as shown on Page 2 of the story.

The following civic minded men served on the board of directors, following the issuance of a charter of incorporation from the Secretary of State of Missouri on October 13, 1952:
HENRY HILLEN AND 8 OTHER MEN SERVED, and Henry Hillen served as the first chief of the fire department. He headed a force of volunteer firemen from Meta and the rural areas. Many serious fires were fought by the department. The fire protection was by membership in the association. In the late 1950's, when Henry Hillen moved to Linn, MO., Herman Wansing assumed the duties.
