Funeral service for Alton Adams, 73, 4410 Harmon Lane, who died Wednesday, will be conducted Friday at 3:30 p.m. at the West Funeral Home Chapel.

Charles McNew, associate pastor of Happy Valley Baptist Church, will officiate, assisted by Dwaine Adams, who is a grandson of the deceased and is associated with a Spanish Baptist Church in California.

Burial will be in Carlsbad Cemetery. Pallbearers are Tony Dominguez, Harold Grandi, Jack Williams, C.F. Shelton, Terry MacArthur and Billy Sherrell.

Mr. Adams was born June 17, 1917, in Northfield, Texas. He received his education and was raised in Northfield and Matador, Texas, where he learned farm and ranch work on his father's ranch. He broke and trained horses.

Coming to New Mexico in 1940, he worked for Pardue and Guitar with his grandfather on the Delaware Ranch, breaking horses and caring for cattle.

In 1942, Mr. Adams began his employment with International Minerals and Chemical Corp. where he worked until 1962.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corp and special Regiment Engineer Company A in World War II.

He operated a welding shop for 11 years before going to work with Mississippi Chemical Corp., from which he retired in 1982.

Mr. Adams was a former member of the Operating Engineers Union and the Quarter Horse Association, and was a member of the Happy Valley Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Vada Adams, of the home; two daughters, Dorothy Durease Jones, Richardson, Texas, and Shirley Kaye Washburn, Carlsbad; two brothers, Eldren Adams, El Paso, and Pink Oliver Adams, Lawton, Okla; two sisters, Mirim Garner, Matador, and Arvine Dobbins, Waterford, Calif.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
