When very young, Clara and her sister Rose were raised by their grandparents Rufus John Pack and Catherine Fudge Peters-Pack when their mother and father died in 1876 and 1878 respectively, then moving with their grandparents from West Virginia to Iola, Kansas in 1881 and to Cedar Vale, Kansas in 1882. In 1888, both Clara and her sister moved to Kansas City where Clara taught school.
