"Anson Clark Boyes---Pioneer
Born March 21st, 1851 in New York state near Buffalo. He came to Michigan in 1858. Grew up in Johnstown Tp., Barry Co. Michigan. Went to a country school in the Stevens Dist. While still in his teens, he was the headsawyer in a sawmill. Before he was of age, he had learned the carpenter's trade. He was married to Mary A. Garrett on March 21st, 1872. Two children were born Lizzie M. April 25, 1873 and Irving Leroy Dec 30, 1876.

In her memoirs, "My Own Life Story", Elizabeth Maria Boyes Cairns writes of her father, Anson Clark Boyes, as follows. "My father was an outstanding sort of man, sincere, friendly, humorous, a good business man capable in many ways and willing to take on responsibility. My mother (Mary Adelaide Garrett) too, was well liked and respectful, came from a good family, was nice looking, musical, quiet and loveable."

While Anson's main occupation was Carpenter, for many years he owned a farm in Rutland Township in Barry County and also ran a country store in Shultz. Anson later went on to become Postmaster for the town of Shultz, Michigan from August 9, 1916 to January 20, 1920. My father, Loren Boyes, remembered him as a kind man and recalled going to his country store as a small boy and Anson would always give him some candy. According to a letter from Harriett Proefrock, her father, Henry (Harry) Benjamin Babcock, owned a farm that bordered Anson's and that they were very good friends.

Mary died on 17 Nov 1879 and on 19 Nov 1880, Anson married his 2nd wife, Anna (Annie) Elizabeth Benedict. From this marriage were born 4 sons and 1 daughter. They were: Orville,1884-1918, David,1886-1965, Earl Russell, 1888-1971 and Carl, 1893-1956. Daughter Minnie L. was born 1882 and died in 1958.
