obit "Weymouth Gazette & Transcript" Friday, October 12, 1906, Weymouth, Mass.
It is seldom that a community is called to part with two of the leading citizens with no apparent note of warnings as has Weymouth within the past few weeks. Last Friday, John B. Rhines was pursuing his usual avoccations in his apparent health Saturday morning he took his breakfast as usual but before another hour had passed, he has gone fron an earthly activities as the result of a heart difficulty. Mr. Rhines was a son of the late John C. Rhines, a prominent lumber dealer and business man, and was born 60 years ago. He passed through the several grades of Weymouth Schools; then entered a banking house in Boston where he spent three years and then joined the late Nathaniel Blanchard in the grain business, but remained a short time in it when he became associated with his father in the lumber business and at the death of the senior member he continued the so long established trade.
While never an aspirant for political honors or public office, Mr. Rhines always took a deep interest in the affairs of his entire town and his advice was sought to committees and public matters. He was elected as a member of the Board of Trustees of Tufts Library, Weymouth, when it was first established and held continuous office until the time of his death. The Union Congregational Church of Weymouth and Braintree had in him one of its most interested and ardent supporters, and herefore his advice and council will be missed. Funeral services held at his late home, Tuesday afternoon were largely attended by relatives, friends and neighbors. Rev. Robert H. Cochrane of the above named church conducted the service and the Weber Quartet of Boston rendered several appropriate selections. The bearers were John Sullivan, Charles Trask, Peter F. Fowler, and John Condrick, employees of the deceased and Henry Willoby and James Vining business neighbors. The burial was in the family lot at Village Cemetery.
