It is also a matter of history that one of Galena's early settlers, named Samuel Hughlett, inherited a large number of slaves from his father, who had a plantation in Kentucky, and that he brought these slaves to Galena and gave all of them their freedom.

THE LATE SAMUEL HUGHLETT
The Dubuque Herald, in speaking of the death of our esteemed citizen, Samuel Hughlett, says: "Our older citizens speak in the highest terms of Mr. Hughlett and of his residence here over twenty years ago. His loss will be felt by a large circle of business acquaintances in Galena, and by those
citizens of Dubuque who knew him, some of whom attend his funeral on Friday last.

HUGHLETT, Samuel, dated October 13, 1863, proved January 9, 1864. Whereas, I own two lead smelting furnaces, with the ground on which the same are situated, and grounds about said furnaces, necessary for the convenience and use of the same. One of said furnaces above the City of Galena and the lands belonging to the same being portions of Sec 17 T28 R1E, Sec 8 T28 R1E, Sec 12 T28 R1W, and Sec 13 T28 R1W. A second furnace is situated on Small Pox Creek about six miles south of the City of Galena. And whereas I am now engaged in the business of buying & smelting Lead Ore in partnership with my son Thomas B. HUGHLETT; now upon my death, it is my will that all the partnership matters with my son be arranged & settled up by my Executors according to the terms of the agreement of said partnership. It is therefore my will, and I do devise & direct that my Executors hereinafter named, shall upon my death take & hold the above described furnaces & the said land belong thereto as above described, until my youngest daughter Margret Sophia shall arrive at the age of twenty two years. An I further direct that the said business shall be carried on and managed by my son Thomas, the capital for carrying on the said business to the amount of Ten thousand Dollars, to my said son from my estate by my Executors, without interest. The profits derived from said business to be divided as follows: One third to my son Thomas and two thirds to my Executors for the benefit of & to be divded amongest my children as hereinafter provided. Third.`All my other property & estate Real & Personal & of every kind & nature, I will that my Executors shall take; In Trust, for my children as hereinafter provided, to wit. My executors are directed to provide from my Estate for the support & maintainance of my children Thomas: Elizabeth: Alice Rebecca: Ellen S. and Margret Sophia & for the education of thsoe whose education shall not be completed: and shall provide for them suitable board, clothing, Doctors attendance & all things necessary for the comfortable support during the period last aforesaid. In case of the marriage of any one of my daughters before my said daughter Margaret Sophia attain the age of twenty two years: then my executors are authorized to pay over to such daughter, or daughters so marrying from my estate any sum not exceeding five thousand dollars And upon my daughter Margret Sophia arriving at the age of twenty two years, or in case of her death, upon my daughter Ellen S. reaching the said age of twenty two years, I direct that all my estate real & personal of every kind and nature shall be equally divided amongest my children Mary Ann MATTESON (wife of J.
