Nancy Lewis, a resident of Spanish Fort, died Friday, July 6, 2012. She was born December 31, 1930 to Lorena and Chester Lewis in Hackensack, New Jersey.
Nancy attended school both in New Jersey and West Virginia where she earned a bachelor of science in social work from Marshall College in 1952.
Ms. Lewis had a long and varied career in social work beginning as a case worker and rising to a supervisor in West Virginia. She earned a master's degree in social work from the University of Chicago in 1961. During the Vietnam war she served as social work director on the hospital ship, Repose. For a number of years she taught in the School of Social Work at the University of Tennessee. In 1970 she accepted a job in the Mobile Department of Human Resources and later became a supervisor in charge of child welfare. Nancy continued in that position until she retired in 1991.
Ms. Lewis was active in the National Association of Social Workers, Child Care Association, Mobile Mental Health Association, Residential Care Association, and others. She enjoyed making costumes for the Joe Jefferson Players.
Nancy received many awards for excellent work in her field. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1978, Who's Who in American Women in 1981, and Outstanding Woman of the Year in 1988.
She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Mobile and sang in the choir. After retiring she moved to the Eastern Shore and became a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Daphne.
Interment will be held in the Garden of the Resurrection at St. Paul's Church at 6:00 PM on Thursday, July 12, 2012. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Paul's Church.
