Alvin became a US citizen as an infant. His father died when Alvin was 6 years of age. He was then raised by his mother.
As a young man he worked for the railroad and as a bridge contractor. He served in World War I. In 1924 he married Bertha Payne. Bertha and Alvin lived the latter years of his life in West Frankfort, Illinois.
