Birth: 1804
County Wicklow, Ireland
Death: Nov. 14, 1878

Elizabeth and John emigrated from Avoca, County Wicklow, to the US in 1853 accompanied by their children James (26), Jane (24), Edward (21), Michael (16) William (12), Hugh (10) and Joseph (8). They spent 5 yrs in Rockaway, NJ working in the iron mines. Daughter Jane married and remained in NJ and Edward's fate is unknown, but the rest of the family headed west and homesteaded on 80 acres in Blanchard township in 1858. Butterfield's History of Lafayette County notes the first school in Blanchardville convened in 1858 with Joseph, Hugh, William and Michael Dearth listed among its first pupils. Hugh and Michael died in the Civil War. Jane and her husband died short time after, and their children, Rebecca, Rachel, Catherine, William and Lucy Rogers were sent west to live on the homestead with Grandmother Elizabeth and Uncle Joseph, Grandfather John having passed away in 1869.
