Daughters of Utah Pioneers Obituary Scrapbook

Thursday, 9 June 1938

TOOELE, Utah.--Joseph Parkinson Bryan; 69, died at his home here, 180 West First North Street, at 2:45 a.m. today of heart trouble, following an illness of seven months. Mr. Bryan was born July 3, 1868, at Grantsville, son of Charles Graham and Hannah Clark Parkinson.

When he was about a year old his mother died and he went to Erda to make his home with an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. George W. Bryan. When he had lived at Erda for a year, his aunt died and later Mr. Bryan married again. This couple was the only parents he knew, as he had been too young to remember his own mother or his aunt. He grew up as a member of the Bryan family, taking the name as well. He is known today as Mr. Bryan and his children all bear the same name.

He engaged in farming, hauling and mining by way of occupation.

He was married Nov. 11, 1897 to Sarah Murray; to this union, seven children survive, an infant daughter having died. His wife died in 1913. Mr. Bryan married Elvina Sidwell on Jan. 24, 1932, and she too survives him.

He was one of the early superintendents of the M. I. A. in the Batesville Ward and was active in both the M. I. A. and Sunday School. He was a High Priest.

Surviving children are: a son Alex J. Bryan, Tooele; five daughters; Mrs. Hazel Walters, Bridgeland, Duchesne County, Utah; Mrs. Lois Gillespie, Mrs. Fern B. Jensen, Mrs. Margaret Benson and Mrs. S. Melba Powell, all of Tooele; also by 10 grandchildren and several brothers and sisters.

Services will be held in Tooele North Ward Sunday at 1:30 p.m., Interment will be in Tooele. Friends may call at the home from 10 a. m. Sunday until time of the services.
