Birt Summers and his wife Fanchon taught at Emmanuel Missionary College (now Andrews University) in Berrien Springs, Michigan from 1918 to 1934. He served as "Dean of the Conservatory" and taught voice, piano and organ. His wife assisted in piano instruction.

Prior to teaching at EMC, Summers had been organist and choir director at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana; Central Presbyterian Church in Erie, Pennsylvania; and First Presbyterian Church in Muncie, Indiana. He had served in Muncie for fifteen years.

Summers studied organ, boy-choir training, and theory at the New England Conservatory in Boston. He obtained a bachelor of music degree from the Bush Conservatory of Music in Chicago in 1920, and was awarded a "Doctor of Music" degree by BCMC in 1923. He was a composer and according to his obituary his composition Rustic Suite was performed by the Sacramento Philharmonic.
