Lester W. Johnson

Mr. Lester W. Johnson, 96, of Morris, passed away Thursday evening at Onawa Community Hospital, with his family his bedside.

He was born July 5, 1910, in Danville, the son of the late Clarence and Eva (Goff) Johnson. He was raised and educated in the Onawa area and worked for numerous farmers in the Onawa area before joining the U.S. Army in 1943.

After his service time, Mr. Johnson began working in Automotive garages in the Kankakee and Streator area before settling in Morris where he worked for Tague Cheverolet.

On November 26, 1953, he married Margaret (Holmes) Goslin in Streator, and then settled in Morris where they would live their lives.

In 1955, he opened Johnson Glass and Lock Service, located at the corner of Washington and Fulton, which is now Sister's Coffee Shop. Later, he moved his business to the old Kroger building on Jackson Street. He would later move his business onto Liberty Street. In 1975, he sold his business to Noble Glass and Lock.

He enjoyed handyman projects and woodworking, and he was an avid gollfer. Mr. Johnson was involved with the American Legion, wherehe was a 61-year member. He was a member of the fraternal Order of Eagles, Morris Country Club, and he was an alderman for the city of Morris for eight years. He was a 50-year plus member of First Presbyterian Church in Morris.

Surviving are one daughter, Janet (Don) Matteson of Morris; three grandchildren, Mark (Rosanne) Matteson, Sara (Ted) Haynes and Janee A. Matteson; great-gandchildren David Haynes, Heather Haynes and Nicholas and Audrey Matteson; one great-grat-grandchild Anthony Haynes; one sister, June Chevalier of Ottowa; and two brothers, James of Arizona and Don of Utica. Many Nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceeded in death by his wife , Margaret (1994); a daughter, Margaret A. Goslin (1995); three sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct 9, at the First Presbyterian Church in Morris, with Pastor Robert Claus and Pastor Gavin Finefield officiating. U.C. Davis and Sons Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Streator. Military honors will be preformed by the Morris Color Guard.
