Del Norte Prospectors dated June 23, 1967 and June 30, 1967
John Campos, 37, of South Fork, was killed about noon on Wednesday in a logging accident on Carnero Creek in Saguache County. He was felling for Norman Rue and was working alone about 19 miles up from Carnero forks on a timber sale. A standing dead snag tree fell across his head and shoulders and he sustained multiple injuries. Johnny had felled his tree and was trimming off branches. Apparently he did no hear or see the snag falling. He was killed immediately. Missing him, other members of the crew went back to the area and found the man. Saguache deputy sheriff Phil Hawker and coroner Jack Grey went to the scene to investigate and declared it an accident.
Funeral services were held at Holy Name of Mary church Monday morning. American Legion conducted military rites at the cemetery.
John was born at South Fork, the son of Camillo and Porfiria Romero Campos. He grew up in the community. He graduated with the 1950 Del Norte schools class and was a Korean War Veteran.
He is survivied by his widow, Eleanor, and seven children, John, Lorraine, Irene, Susie, James, Bernadette, and Julian; brother Joe and four sisters, Eleanor, Martha, Camilla and Josephine.
Pallbearers were Norman Heckaman, Leo Cottrell, LeRoy and Norman Rue, Chris Montoya and Elias Sanchez.
