Sergeant C.C. McMillan
Co. A, 1st S.C. Regiment
Bratton's Brigade
Fields Division
Army Northern Virginia
Cary Columbus McMillan was the last survivor of his company. He died August 26, 1932, aged eighty-nine years, three months, and twenty days. The following account of his death appeared in The Bamberg Herald of Bamberg, S.C.
LAST OF THE BAMBERG GUARDS PASSES
In the death of Cary McMillan on August 26th we lose one more Confederate veteran and the last of the 92 men who formed the Bamberg Guards. He fought through the war and was with Lee at the surrender. Wounded at Manassas, he carried the ball in his left shoulder to his grave.
He was born May 6, 1843, and was the tenth of the fifteen good men and women who were the family of Henry W. McMillan and Sophia Faust, his wife. He married Mrs. Martha Jennings McMillan, widow of his deceased brother, William Franklin McMillan. Of this marriage there were two children, William Franklin McMillan and Mary Hampton McMillan. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Mary Bailey; two grandsons, Ryerson and Frank McMillan, and a little great-granddaughter, Harriet Jane McMillan.
For several years he made his home in Greenville with his daughter, Mrs. Mary Bailey, who has been his devoted companion and nurse.
The Funeral services were held at Old Union Cemetery near Cope and were conducted by the Rev. W. M. Cleckley, assisted by Rev. Mr. Williams, of Cope. Mr. Cleckley spoke of the splendid character and influence of "Uncle Cary" as his Sunday School teacher in boyhood. It was this influence which later caused Mr. Cleckley to enter the ministry. He had never heard "Uncle Cary" utter a word which could not have been said in the presence of a lady or even from the pulpit.
He was loved by a large number of kin and friends, and there are many living today who are profiting through his kindness. A Christian gentleman, he died as he had lived, an honor to his name and generation.
