Southport, N.C. - Bobby Wells DeWitte Sr., 75 of Southport, N.C., died Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport. Mr. DeWitte was born May 24, 1933, to Shedrick DeWitte and Laura Hodd DeWitte, and was raised in Orangeburg County. He was a graduate of Norway High School. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict in the Signal Corp. After completing his tour of duty, Mr. DeWitte worked in private industry for about eight years, and then began his civil service career in 1960. He attended various Army training courses, including participation in Executive Seminar Center Programs, and management and supervisory training programs. Mr. DeWitte received various awards over his career. Major General Piatak presented him with the Superior Civilian Service Award for his support of Operation Desert Shield. Mr. DeWitte assumed duties as Director of United States Army Communications Command Agency, Military Ocean Terminal, Sunny Point of March 7, 1974. Prior to the above duties, he was Operations Officer, Safeguard Site, North Dakota; and Communications Officer, Fort Story, Virginia. Prior to that, he was Communications Officer, Charleston Army Depot, North Charleston. Effective October 1, 1987, Mr. DeWitte became Director of Information Management (DOIM), United States Army Information Systems Command Activity, MOTSU. He was a Mason and a member of VFW Post 3142 in Charleston. He was preceded in death by a son, Bobby W. DeWitte II and a sister, Patricia DeWitte. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle "Connie" Lipscomb DeWitte of the home; a daughter, Gina DeWitte Todd of Southport; and grandson, Steven Todd. The family will receive friends from 4-5 p.m., on Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Peacock-Newman and White Funeral Home in Southport, N.C. The funeral service will be held at 5 p.m., in the Peacock-Newman and White Funeral Home Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, at Two Mile Swamp Baptist Church in Cope.
