Emil A. Becker, for many years a merchant of Spring Garden and Eldon and prominent in civic and business affairs in the communit, died at his home at 112 North Maple Street, Thursday, August 7, at 89 years of age. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Malcolm Younger officiating.
Mr. Becker was born in Bremmen Westphalia, Germany, January 31, 1858, and came to America with his parents and brothers and sisters when he was 12 years old. He lived in St. Louis for a time and later moved to the Spring Garden community where he worked on a farm and in a store. Later he and his brother, Ernest, went into business for themselves.
On April 23, 1900, Mr. Becker was married to Martha Jane Steen and they were parents of four children, Walter, Eula, Lenah and Mabel, who survive his death with their mother.
The family moved to Eldon in 1904 at which time Mr. Becker established his business which was continued until 1926. He took an active interest in the promotion of Eldon enterprises for many years and was able to be about until two weeks prior to his death.
Early in his life he became a member of the Baptist Church and as long as he was able, he continued to be active in both church and Sunday school.
Members of the family are Walter Becker of Ft. Worth, Tex.; Mrs. Leland Mills, Lake Ozark; Mrs. M.Z. Haynes, Springfield, Mo.; Mrs. T.H. Duckett, Jr., Slaton, Tex.; a sister, Mrs. Emma Rush, Eldon; and a granddaughter, Martha Mae Finkbiner, Springfield, Mo.
Burial was made in the Eldon Cemetery with Kays Funeral service in charge.
