John Alexander Stearnes, son of Dr John D Stearnes
b ABT 1828 NH & Julia Ann GOODMAN b 14 MAY 1833 Goodman Dist Harris Co GA.Julia dau of wealthy plantation owner Aaron Goodman. Julia and the Dr. had 4 children before her death. After she died the children were raised mostly by her GA parents.
1870 Lowndes Co census lists Dr. John and children Julia and Johnnie. Dr. John owned land Ft Deposit Lowndes Co ALa. Some 30 years later c1880 he married again to young widow Mrs. Lizzie (MNU) Donnell. After a long time looking, was found buried Geneva City Cem Geneva Co AL died November 8 1882.
Now the Son John Alexander lst married 5 DEC 1886 at home of Mrs. A.B. Gafford, Greenville AL to Mary Jane GAFFORD b 27 FEB 1866 Alabama. Divorced if any, before 1887.
How or when John Alexander met Mary Jane Gafford is not known. (Ft. Deposit AL is close to Greenville.) Their marriage was recorded and documented in several places, not the least of which, was the letter (now possession)of descendant. This letter was information from the Gafford family Bible Gafford had inherited from her mother, Mary Jane Gafford. Following the marriage of about a year he was gone to TX after their marriage.
There in short order he met and married Mary Alice Ramsey
18 DEC 1887. Meantime he had changed his name to John Albert Goodman,surname of his mother who died when he was an infant, he then raised by the GA Goodman family, hardly knowing his father, John D. Stearnes, a Doctor in Alabama.
John D. died four years before John Alexander married Mary Jane Gafford. What ever he did during this time resulted in his health declining. He wound up sick at the home of Mary Jane's stepfather who was also a Doctor. Mary Jane must have met and married him there and when he recovered mind and body, he left for TX. After he married Mary Alice Ramsey he was a Pastor in TX. He and Mary Alice had 6 children under his new name of Goodman. It is unknown if his 2nd wife Mary Ramsey or any of the children knew of his past or their name is really Stearnes.

daughter of Elenzo Harrison Ramsey & 2nd wife Margaret West.
John and Mary had at lest 1 son and 5 daughters.

Thursday January 20, 1938 Arlington Citizen Albert Goodman Dies Here Friday Morning
John Albert Goodman, age 75, Arlington cotton buyer, died at his residence Friday morning. He had been a resident of Arlington for 51 years, and celebrated his golden wedding anniversary December 18. Mr. Goodman was a member of the Presbyterian Church and had served as a deacon for several years. Survivors are his widow [Mary Alice Ramsey]; four daughters, Miss Ethel Goodman, teacher in Arlington public schools; Mrs. Sam Owens, Arlington; Mrs. Sidney Thrash, Lubbock; and Mrs. Clyde Owens, Long Beach Cal.
Funerals services were conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian Church with Rev. John H. Patterson, pastor, assisted by Rev. S. M. Bennett, officiating. Burial was in Parkdale Cemetery. Pallbearers were Hugh Smith, Fred Smyers and Edward Rankin, all of Arlington, and J. O. Estes, Knox Anderson and Gordon Tomlinson, Fort Worth. Luttrell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
