James served as a private with the 208th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company F (Civil War). He was wounded at Petersburg, Virginia, on April 2, 1865. The Pennsylvania Veterans' Burial Record lists James as buried in St. Paul's, SW Madison Township.

Additional biographical information courtesy of Dennis Brandt: In 1860, he was a farm laborer living in Jackson Township, Perry County, with the Michael Foose family. He stood 5' 5" tall and had black hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 2, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 6 as a private with Co. F, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.

He married Sarah E. Comp in 1865 and fathered Hetty Ann (b. @1867), Conrad Michael (b. 11/21/70), John W. (b. @1872), Thomas M. (b. @1876), Catherine M. (b. @1877), Edward (b. @1880), Florence E. (b. @1883), and Mary (b. @1889, d. 1897).

The son of Michael & Sarah (Shull) Foose, he married Sarah Elizabeth Comp in 1865 and fathered Hetty Ann (b. @1867), Conrad Michael (b. 11/21/70), John W. (b. 01/31/74), Thomas M. (b. 02/29/76), Katherine M. (b. 10/10/78 - married F. R. Cooper), James Edward (b. 03/08/81), Flora Elizabeth (b. 09/29/84 - married a Cohick), and Mary (b. @1889, d. 1897). He died in Madison Township, Perry County, from "arteriosclerosis" with "apoplexy" a contributing factor.
