A funeral liturgy for John A. Carl of McMinnville will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in St. James Catholic Church, McMinnville, with the Rev. Terry O'Connell officiating. Interment will be in St. James Catholic Cemetery, McMinnville.

Rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, McMinnville.

The funeral home will be open for visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Mr. Carl died Dec. 15, 2002, in his home. He was 73.

He was born April 27, 1929, in Park Rapids, Minn., the son of Frederick and Anna Garin Carl. He was raised and educated in Park Rapids, where he graduated from high school in 1949.

He and Gloria Swanson were married Nov. 26, 1952, in Park Rapids.

He served in the Army infantry during the Korean War. After the war, he farmed in Minnesota for two years. He lived in the Carlton-Yamhill area from 1955 to 1966, when he moved to McMinnville.

Mr. Carl worked as a finish carpenter most of his life. He loved fishing, hunting and watching the Green Bay Packers football team. He belonged to St. James Catholic Church. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association and also belonged to American Legion Post 21.

Family members said he was a hard worker with a great sense of humor. They added that he was committed to his family, church and his work.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Joseph Carl of Naukati, Alaska, Mark Carl of Craig, Alaska, and Douglas Carl of Hollis, Alaska; four daughters, Mary Hook, Sue Price and Joan Koch, all of McMinnville, and Tricia Wright of Talent; four brothers, Bernie Carl and Fred Carl, both of McMinnville, Gerald Carl of Portland and Eugene Carl of Alexandria; a sister, Ruth Niska of Alexandria, Minn.; 18 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a son, John Carl, in 1990; two brothers, Charles Carl and Frank Carl; and two sisters, Dorothy Beason and Elizabeth Delbom.
