Maria Teresa Palmieri was born in Southern Italy in November of 1899. She had a difficult childhood, working long hours in the fields to help support her large family. Maria married Salvatore Izzo and left Naples Italy by ship for the United States. She and her husband entered Ellis Island in 1920 and settled in Buffalo, NY, where they began raising a family. She had six children--two daughters and four sons. Her oldest daughter, Josephina, and youngest son, Rafael, died in early childhood. In the early 1930s, the family moved to Los Angeles County, CA. Maria raised her family with very little money during the dark days of the Great Depression and World War II. She had 10 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Maria lost her husband to cancer in 1958 and remarried shortly thereafter. On May 9, 1975, she died of cancer. Maria was a beautiful person who was well loved and respected. She has been greatly missed and remains in the hearts of those who hold her memory dear.
