Eberlein, Merton Gerald
Age 96, of Mauston, passed away Sat., Feb. 6, 1999 at Fair View Nursing Home, Mauston. Merton was born Sept. 1, 1902, the son of Frederick Otto and Frances Ethel (Bean) Eberlein in the Town of Lindina. He lived in the Mauston area with a brother, Phillip Joseph Eberlein and his parents, all now deceased. He graduated from Mauston Public Schools in June of 1920.
He married Gladys M. Young on Oct. 9, 1926 in Stevens Point, WI. She preceded him in death in 1987. Merton was confirmed in St. John's Episcopal Church of Mauston and has been an active member for 83 years, serving in many capacities. He was an avid Packer and Badger fan. Merton was appointed to the Railway Mail Service in 1920 and retired on Jan. 1, 1967 as Assistant Postmaster in Milwaukee. He moved to his home in Mauston and became active in many community affairs, serving on the Historical Society and the School Board. He was Historiographer and Archivist for the Juneau County Historical Society. Merton was the editor and principal writer of the History of Juneau
County for which he was given an award of merit by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin in 1988. Merton was a member of the National Genealogy Society, Wisconsin Genealogy Society, Juneau County Genealogy Society, Virginia Genealogy Society, Southern Bean Association, Clan McBean Association, Kiwanis, Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters, Monroe County Historical Society, Milwaukee County Historical Association, Railroad and Locomotive Historical Society, the State of Wisconsin Historical Society and the Republican Party. He was a Mason for 74 years and a R.A.M. Knights Templar, Scottish Rite and Zor Shrine member. He is survived by a son Fred S. (Shirley) Eberlein of Platteville, Wisconsin; a daughter, Judith (Joe) Ziemann of Bessemer, Michigan (formerly of Green Bay); grandchildren, Nancy, John (Theresa), Mark (Paulina), Steven (Adrianne), Scott (Sarah) Eberlein, Todd Axtell and Karen Chuck) Chriske; step-grandsons, John (Corinne) and Bob (Kris) Ziemann; nine great grandchildren; caregivers and special friends, Emma Onsager and Nancy and Wayne McCullick and other relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999 at 11:00 AM at St. John's Episcopal Church, Mauston with The Right Rev. Wantland, Bishop of the Diocese of Eau Claire officiating with The Rev. Canon E.N. Stillings assisting. Burial Will be at the Mauston Cemetery. Friends may call Wed., Feb. 10, 1999 from 4-8 PM at the Crandell Funeral Home, Mauston where Masonic Memorial Services will be held at 7:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, a Memorial Fund has been established.
