Called By Death

Thaddeaus Lutz, Well Known
Citizen Of City, Passes To
His Reward

Over eighty-fours of a useful life came to an end yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock when death claimed the venerable Thaddaeus Lutz at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Schafer, corner Plum and Cherry streets. Mr. Lutz died of old age, having been bedfast since Saturday. He was down town last Friday and showed little signs of his remarkable age.
Mr. Lutz was a native of Baden Germany, where he was born March 27, 1827. He came to this country in 1853, and stayed for a brief time with an uncle in Pennsylvania before he came to this state.
Later in the same year, he arrived at Eddyville, where he spent only a short time before coming to this city, where he had since resided. Mr. Lutz was one of the pioneer employees of the Burlington road, having served in various capacities for a period of thirty years. He later engaged in business in Ottumwa and ten years ago he retired. He was a devout Catholic and had been a member of the Sacred Heart parish since its organization..
Mr. Lutz was preceded in death by his wife, who died some thirteen years ago. The are one brother and one sister in Baden, Germany and three children in this country left to mourn his loss. The children are Mrs. Schafer and Joseph A. Lutz of Ottumwa and C. L. Lutz of Wichita, Kan.
Friends are asked to omit flowers.
The funeral services will be held at the Sacred Heart Catholic church, Friday morning at 8:30 o'clock with requiem mass. The pastor, Rev. Father James Foley, will be in charge. Interment will be in Calvary cemetery.
