Nellie (Manuela) Castillo

Nellie (Manuela) Castillo passed away peacefully on December 14, 2015 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Long Beach, California surrounded by her family. She was 93 years old. Nellie was born on June 17, 1922 in Jalisco, Mexico to Josefina Jara-Castro and Simone Castro and later raised by Josefina and Manuel Carreon. When she was 6 years old, she moved to a ranch in Dominguez Hills with her parents where she grew up. She later worked at her parents' restaurant, Rancho Alegre in Wilmington, where she met and fell in love with her soul mate and husband of 62 years, Lupe Castillo (deceased). They married on September 7, 1949 in Long Beach, California and together had 4 daughters, Olivia, Anita, Lydia, and Elisa. Nellie and Lupe were residents of Long Beach for 65 years. In addition to being a loving wife and mother, Nellie worked as a head chef at a family-owned restaurant, Casa Castillo.

Nellie (and Lupe) loved the Dodgers, taking cruises to Kauai and taking bus trips to casinos where she often came home a winner. When Nellie and Lupe weren’t watching their favorite TV shows, Nellie could be found cooking or tending to her garden.

Nellie had an incredibly loving heart and was intent on feeding her family with love and her specialty Mexican dishes. Until her last breath, she put others before herself. Anyone who knew Nellie loved her witty sense of humor, her generous heart, and her devotion to her family. She loved her family fiercely and knew what it mean to love unconditionally.

Nellie and Lupe are survived by their 4 daughters and sons-in-law (Jerry Pohl, Mike Pierce, Harvey Barish, and Steve Worley), 11 “favorite” grandchildren (Lori Pohl, Jeff Pohl, Amy Jordan, Kevin Pierce, Mark Barish, Jessica Barish, Jenny Barish, Jodi Bogomilsky, Luke Worley, Jake Worley and Cody Worley) and 14 great-grandchildren (Zachary Pohl, Elliette and Cole Jordan, Maddison, Delaney and Thatcher Pohl, Logan and Oliver Worley, Devon Barish, Mason and Hayden Espinoza, Josh, Hannah and Emma Bogomilsky). A rosary and mass will take place on December 22, 2015 at St. Barnabas Catholic Church, 3955 Orange Street, in Long Beach, California at 10:30am. Nellie will be laid to rest at All Souls Cemetery 4400 Cherry Ave in Long Beach immediately following mass.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
