James E. Aldred, 37, of Mount Sterling, was killed Wednesday afternoon in a tractor accident along the Ohio River just east of the Warsaw ferry landing.
Mr. Aldred, a State Highway Department employee, was mowing grass along State Road 156 about 400 feet east of the Ferry landing (one mile east of Florence), when the tractor rolled down a steep bank backward toward the river, witnesses said. When the tractor reached the bottom of the slope, it overturned, pinning Mr. Aldred in the water at the edge of the river, said the witnesses, who were on the Warsaw ferryboat when the accident occurred.
The Switzerland County Emergency Squad was summoned, but Mr. Aldred died at the scene. The Coroner said an autopsy would be performed to determine the cause of death. It revealed death was caused by spinal and other internal injuries suffered in the accident.
