Family tradition says his middle name is Pierson (or some variation of that, most likely Pearson). After working on his line for several years now, I don't believe that was his middle name.
His wife, Nancy Varble, is a descendant of the Clifford line and her grandfather is Jacob Pearson Clifford. The names Varble, Clifford, and Pearson are passed down through her line.
Since I can find no documentation with James having a middle name at all and his wife has several Pearson connections, it is unlikely that James' name was Pearson.
