Lucinda was born June 2, 1918 in Pottawatomie Co. Kansas, the first child of William Roy and Leva Hackworth Barker. The 1920 census has the family living in Richardson County, Nebraska and Lucinda was age 1,(1 6/12). Her father died May 9, 1928 and her mother was unable to care for her and her siblings. Lucinda Elizabeth, Samuel Thomas and George Louis were put in the Atchison Orphan Home, a baby brother Chester was taken in by a sister of Leva. The 1930 census for Atchison County, Kansas , Shannon Township, State Orphans Home, dated April 30, has Lucinda E. Barker, age 11, KS; Samuel T. Barker, Age 9, KS; George L. Barker, Age 7, KS. In 1931 she was admitted to the State Training School at Winfield, KS.
Sadly Lucinda suffered from Epileptic Seizures, at that time Medical Science did not know exactly what it was or how to treat it. The last records are from the Parsons State Hospital for Epileptics, she was admitted from Pottawatomie County in 1932 and died Feb. 1, 1943 there. Her brother Samuel said she died in a fire, we are still waiting for proof of this.
Only God knows what this little girl, who became a beautiful young lady, went through in her short life, but her family cares. She was only 24 years and 8 months old when she died.
