Biography of Adolph Bartz as written by his son Daniel Bartz on March 9, 1981.

Born to Gustav & Rosina (Mantei) Bartz in Ostruvki, Russia on the 30th of May 1861 got married to Auguste Kropp on the 8th of September 1886. They lived on a small farm, he was a cobbler by trade, most of his business was making boots and shoes for the Russian soldiers. They had a hired man and a maid to help with the farming, 12 children were born to them in Russia, 4 children passed away in Russia, one at the age of 14 years. In 1904 they decided to come to America, they started their long journey with 8 children, the youngest being less than 8 months (Herbert). They arrived in Alpena on the 10th of April 1904. Uncle John was to pick them up from Alpena, he lived about 16 miles away as there was no telephone at that time. Dad told my oldest brother Gust to go and find Uncle John, he was 15 years at that time and could not speak a word of English, how he found him is still a miracle to me but he did. They stayed with Uncle John until they bought a farm (80 acres) they paid $400 for it, later they bought 40 acres more. They did farming until his retirement in 1929, 4 more children were born to them in America. He passed away August 22, 1931 after a short illness of only 12 hours. Mother was born August 3 1869 in Russia and passed away September 4, 1957 after an extended illness. 16 children were born to this marriage. May they rest in peace and may the good Lord grant them the everlasting Heavenly joy.

NOTE: The birth records from the Parishes of Volhynia, South Russia indicate Adolph was born on May 17, 1861 in Bobritzki Budki, Volhynia, Ukraine.
