Birth: Sep. 18, 1823
Kentucky, USA
Death: Jan. 20, 1894
Missouri, USA

James Bennett was the son of Ezekiel Bennett, Sr. (1795-1846) who was born in Virginia and died in Schuyler County, Missouri; and Ezekiel's first Sarah Tye.

It is believed that James' mother died when he was young while they were living in Kentucky. His father remarried in 1827 to Lydia Asbell in Madison County, Kentucky, so she was probably the mother whom James remembered the most.

James had one known brother, John Bennett, who also had a mother with the maiden name of Tye. It is unclear whether he was a full brother or a half-brother.

James' father and step mother Lydia (Asbell) had 6 known children who were James' half-siblings:

Fielding "Dick" Bennett 1828 1900
Mary Polly Bennett 1830 1892
Maletha "May" Bennett 1833 1913
Amos Bennett 1834 1917
Paulina Bennett 1840 1928
Ezekiel Jr. Bennett 1843 1919

The Bennett family also raised two other girls whose relationship to the family is still a mystery, but the Bennett children considered them their siblings:

Orvella (Asbell/Bennett) Winkler 1820-2877
Charity (Bennett) Baldwin Lucas 1822-1874

James Bennett and his brother John, and their father Ezekiel Bennett Sr. went from Kentucky to Missouri in the late 1830s to stake out a claim for land and build a house in anticipation of moving the family there. They chose the plains of Macon County in northern Missouri.

The Bennett family moved there in about 1837. A few years later, they moved further north into the new county of Schuyler near the Iowa border, and again James, John, and their father reportedly built the family home.

In 1848, James Bennett married Maria/Mariah L. "Lovie" (Wells) Randall who was born in 1826 in North Carolina, the daughter of James Wells (1795- ) and Rachel Brown (1788- ) who had moved from Wilkes County, North Carolina to Schuyler County, Missouri.

Mariah was a widow with a daughter Mary A. Randall born in 1845 in Tennessee.

James and Mariah had the following known children:

Male Infant Bennett 1849 1849
Sarah C. Bennett 1850
E. J. S. Bennett 1853
James W. Bennett, Jr. 1856
Charley C. Bennett 1859
Thomas R. Bennett 1863 1930
Forest Dove Bennett 1867 1960
Leo Bennett 1871 1889
Leon F. Bennett 1871

The Bennetts lived in Adair County, Mo. in 1850, in Schuyler County, Mo. in 1860, in Van Buren County, Iowa in 1870, then back in Adair County, Mo. in 1880.

Both James and Mariah are buried in Myers Cemetery in Schuyler County, Mo.
