Deceased Name: Elmer C. Krusemark
EMDEN Elmer C. Krusemark, 99, of Emden, died at 8:30 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 7, 2006) at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.
He was born May 11, 1907, to Ernest C. and Clara Hilgendorf Krusemark and was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in New Holland. He married Ruth Elizabeth Gould on March 3, 1928, and farmed in rural San Jose and later in Prairie Creek Township.
He was a 4-H leader and in 1926 was named State 4-H Corn Club Champion, winning a trip to Chicago International and State 4-H Club Congress.
For many years Elmer was a grower of hybrid seed corn and exhibited prize-winning corn samples at Logan County Fair. In 1969, Elmer was awarded the Governor Ogilvie Trophy for champion Bushel Corn at the Illinois State Fair. He served on the Logan County Farm Bureau Board, County Extension Council and was township chairman for CROP drive for over 20 years.
Elmer was one of the organizers for the Emden Medical Center, on the board of County Health Improvement Association, helped organize Orvil-Prairie Creek Community Chest, and had an over 50-year perfect attendance record at Kiwanis, serving as president three times.
He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Emden, where he was past president of St. Peter Lutheran Brotherhood and served on the finance and building committees for St. Peter Lutheran Church and Memorial Hall. He was active in the building of Camp Griesheim Christian Retreat Center. In 1998, Elmer was honored and received the Fathering Hall of Fame Award from the National Center of Fathering.
Elmer is survived by three sons, Leonard (Betty Ann) Krusemark, Emden; Larry (Rebecca) Krusemark, Pittsville; and David Krusemark, Madison, Mo.; two daughters, Viola (Nelson) Alberts and Mary Lou Klokkenga, both of Emden; two brothers, Raymond (Irene) Krusemark of Mason City and Harold (Roberta) Krusemark of Emden; 17 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. They will miss their "Grandpa."
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth of 63 years, one sister, Florence Garber, one brother, Clarence Krusemark, his son-in-law, Leland Klokkenga, and a great-grandson, Derek Eimer.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Emden. The Rev. David Hofer and the Rev. Frank Pieper will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Further visitation will be two hours before the service on Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery in rural San Jose. Davis Mortuary, Delavan Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, Emden Rescue Squad, or Camp Griesheim.
