Lemenda Young "Minnie" Carpenter
Learn about sponsoring this memorial...
Birth: Sep. 30, 1880
Phoenix
Yazoo County
Mississippi, USA
Death: May 4, 1956

Lemenda Young Carpenter was born in Oak Ridge, Warren County, Mississippi, just outside Vicksburg. She was the daughter of William Edward Carpenter (1857-1932)(Warren Co) and Hannah "Hattie" Elizabeth Dilley Carpenter (1854-1888)(Yazoo Co.)

It is said she married and divorced, returning to her maiden name. For most of her latter years she lived in Salt Lake City, employed as a seamstress.

Her Maternal grandmother was Charlotte Lemenda Hinds Usher (1817-1890)(Jefferson Co., MS). Her grandfather was the Rev Samuel M. Dilley(1802-1874)(Senecaville Ohio-Missippi) whose father participated in New Jersey in the Revolutionary war.

Her Paternal Grandparents were the Carpenters of Alabama and Virginia and the Green family who were related to the Revolutionary war hero, General Green of Virgina.

"Minnie" was a researcher of family history and we have her to thank for much of the information she shared with Jay Andrews about the Dilley families which he published in the 1950s. She was a submitter of much genealogical material to the LDS library including many Dilley, Watkins and Usher records. Although, her submitted Usher lineage stopped at William Usher 1790 she has her name recorded as a researcher of materials entered on Ushers in South Carolina and Ireland going back to early 1700's.

It is said she is was the plural wife of John William Worth Kilgrow. This would have been at a time polygamy was no longer legal in Utah or the US so much secrecy surrounds the circumstances of this marriage. Her grave is next to him and his first wife's.
