BYRON — Donald Robert Hillabush, 81, of Byron and formerly of Batavia, a supervisor at Lapp Insulator prior to his retirement, died Thursday (Feb. 3, 2011) at Buffalo General Hospital in Buffalo.

Mr. Hillabush was born March 1, 1929, in Batavia, a son of the late David Reuben and Gladys Maud (Sprague) Hillabush.

A lifetime resident of Genesee County, he worked for many of his early years for the NY Central Railroad. Later he was employed and retired from Lapp Insulator. He was most recently employed as a caretaker at Grand View Cemetery. He enjoyed boating.

Donald united in marriage on May 22, 1956, to Martha Louise Smith. They became foster parents, lovingly opening their hearts to over 160 children for over 25 years. Martha died June 25, 1989.

His second wife, Sharon L. (McEwen) Hillabush, died in 2009.

Survivors include a daughter, Fawn Ettinger and her fiancé Marcus Mobley of Batavia; two sons, Robert Michael (Barbara) Hillabush of Batavia and Lonnie Sundown of Basom; three brothers, Paul (Ann) Hillabush of St. Johnsville and George (Anita) Hillabush and Keith D. Hillabush, both of Byron; a sister, Ruth (Richard) Crowley of Bergen; a sister-in-law, Doris Hillabush of Elba; a half brother, David F. Hillabush of Florida; two half sisters, Jeanne (Raymond) Shutt of Florida and Betty (William) Harmon of Belfast, two step sisters, Carol (Gerald) Struck of Orchard Park and Jessie (Roy) Button of Perry; several grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was the father of the late John Andrew Hillabush, grand father of a late grandchild, brother of the late David W. Hillabush, Jack O. Hillabush, Sr., Charlotte Sommerfeldt and Sally Burns, step brothers of the late Robert D. Young, Donal G. Young, Carlton M. Young and Dorothy Bower.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 E. Main Street, Batavia, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
