Brother Anselm Mangano, O.S.B., age 69, a Benedictine monk of Marmion Abbey, Aurora, died peacefully in the Lord on December 14, 2010 at the Abbey, attended by his brother monks and his family. He is survived by the members of his monastic community and his brothers and sisters: Dolores Finnegan, Philip (Connie), Joseph (Ellen), Caroline, Anthony (Christine), Frances and Mary (Robert) Kacprowicz, and many nephews and nieces. He was the fifth of eight children of the late Lawrence and Josephine Mangano of Chicago.
Brother Anselm was born in Chicago on August 22, 1941 and was baptized Lawrence in Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica. He received his elementary education at Presentation School and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1960. In 1962 he entered Marmion Abbey and professed his first vows on June 15, 1963, taking the name Anselm. He made perpetual profession of vows on May 30, 1967.
Brother Anselm served Marmion Abbey and Academy in many ways during his monastic life of 47 years. From 1963 to 1988 he served his brother monks as their chef. In 1977 he also was appointed Superintendent of Grounds, responsible for the maintenance of the Abbey grounds, a position he held until his death. From 1992 to 2004 he served as Associate Director for the novices and junior monks of the Abbey. He also was Subprior of the Abbey, the third superior in rank. In the 1990s, Brother served as a supervisor in the residential program of Marmion Academy. For the past 12 years he was the custodian and sacristan of the abbey church.
In 2004 Brother Anselm was diagnosed with cancer and his health began to seriously deteriorate, yet he continued to be faithful to his prayer and community life and to his duties. Throughout his life Brother had a great love for the outdoors, a love that he shared often with others. During the past 10 years he was a leader in Marmion Academy's Kairos retreat program for its senior students and was highly regarded by the students. Brother Anselm will be missed by his monastic brothers, family members and his many, many friends.
