John RICE and Eliza D. SMITH, administrators of the estate of Charles SMITH, published this notice in The Southern Recorder, Milledgeville, Georgia on October 24, 1837: "Georgia, Baldwin County: Will be sold before the Court House door in said county on the first Tuesday in January, next, between the legal hours of sale, all the property belonging to the estate of Charles Smith, late of said county, deceased. Sold for the benefit of the heirs and creditors of said estate."
John was a farmer. By 1840, he and Mary moved to Stewart County, Georgia. They had twelve children between 1833 and 1853: John Wesley; Mary Ann Elizabeth; Charles Jackson; William Smith; Martha Elizabeth Julia; Sarah; James Absalom; Emeline Jane; Joseph Washington; Susan; Henrietta Joanna; and Benjamin Franklin RICE.
Before 1860 they moved again to Thomas County, Georgia where they spent the rest of their lives.
