Ignacio Apodaca served in the U.S. Army for two years, achieving the rank of SGT, and was deployed to Vietnam in 1966. Upon his return to the States he had a difficult time adjusting and had been homeless for years. He died at the age of 64 and all attempts to locate any family members who could claim his body failed. With services provided by a local funeral home he received a funeral service with military honors through Dignity Memorial's Homeless Veterans Burial Program. Services, held on the morning of Thursday, December 20, 2007 were attended by more than 20 people, all volunteers, many of them veterans. His brother, Luis, was also located in time to attend. The folded flag from Ignacio Apodaca's coffin was presented to his brother, Luis Apodaca.
