Dwight Lee Bertsch, 35, Mobridge, died early Saturday after the ambulance carrying him to Bismarck, North Dakota hospital was halted by snow-plugged roads.

Bertsch was injured Friday evening in a pickup-car collision about five miles west of Selby on U. S. Hwy. 12. He worked for the South Dakota's Auditor General's office.

Walworth County Sheriff Jim Spriry said Bertsch was taken to Mobridge Community Hospital by the Selby ambulance. Spiry said that Bertsch suffered multiple injuries and medical personnel decided to try to get him to Bismarck.

Another ambulance, following snowplows, headed north but Spiry said the plows could no longer push through drifts near the North Dakota border.

Duane Moser, a part-time police officer at McLaughlin, said it took the ambulance four hours to travel eight miles between McLaughlin and the border. The ambulance turned back to Mobridge and Spiry said Bertsch died sometime after 12:30 a.m. Saturday on the return trip.

Bertsch's car, westbound from Aberdeen and a pickup driven by 19 year old Casey Kraft, Timber Lake, collided during what Spiry called "bad, bad weather conditions". Spiry daid prior to the collision the Bertsch vehicle skidded and the Kraft vehicle swerved to avoid the accident. Kraft and his three passingers were unhurt, but Bertsch was pinned in his car and spiry said a door had to be pried open to get him out.
