Owensboro Messenger Obituary, Wednesday, February 20, 1901

Mr. Lynch Gray died of heart disease, at his home, Fourth and Daviess Streets, at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. Mr. Gray was born May 6, 1828, in Nelson County, KY., and was a son of Patrick L. Gray and Mary (Howlett) Gray, of Baltimore, who came to Kentucky in 1820. When Mr. Gray was nineteen years of age he went to Hardin County, KY., and learned the wagon and carriage maker's trade. He worked at his trade in Hardin County for three years, and in 1861 came to Daviess County and worked at his trade three years more. He then bought a farm eight miles from Owensboro, on which he lived twelve years, and then bought the Frank L. Hall farm of 236 acres just above the city on Old Hardinsburg Road. When the Farmers and Traders bank was organized on November 4, 1876, he became its vice president , and on the death of Dr. A. D. Hill, president of the bank, in December, 1878, Mr. Gray was elected president, which position he held until the bank went into liquidation in 1898. He was married October 24, 1854, to Miss Louisa Showmaker, daughter of Price Shoemaker. She died October 2, 1875, leaving two daughters - Mrs. J. M. Haynes and Mrs A. J. Mitchell. Mr. Gray married Miss Mary F. Haynes, February 24, 1877, daughter of Frank Haynes. He was a Mason from 1848 till his death and a member of the First Baptist Church. Mr. Gray was in feeble health for several years before his death, but was not confined to his room more than about four weeks before the end came. The funeral will occur from the residence at 10 a.m. tomorrow, and will be conducted by the Masons. Rev. E. Pendleton Jones will preach the funeral. Interment at Elmwood Cemetery.
