John Henry Burns was the son of Jonathan Burns II and his second wife, Elizabeth Watson. John Henry's grandparents and great-grandparents originally settled along the Mulberry River in Blount and Cullman counties about 1818.
Lexer Penola Grant was the daughter of Rev John W Grant and Mary Cordelia McGaha. The Grants moved to the Hanceville area sometime after 1880.
John and Lexer were married Nov 21, 1892. They first rented property south of Hanceville where daughter Tessie Maud Burns was born, then near Hopewell, and finally moved to Livingston Chapel where 10 acres were bought in 1900 and son John Durward Burns was born. In 1901, an 80 acre farm was bought in the Culvert community, west of Trimble and east of Crane Hill, and their other six children were born there: Bessie Cordelia Burns, Gena Belle Burns, Clifford Alfonso Burns, Cranford Herman Burns, Ellis Beecher Burns and Erma Delene Burns.
In 1919, the family moved back to Hanceville on land near the Hopewell Baptist Church and bordered by the Hanceville-Cullman Pike, now Hwy 31. In 1922, all the family possessions were sold, outstanding debts were paid, and the family moved to Akron. After saving enough money for a fresh start, the family returned to Cullman where a small farm was bought just west of the Cullman City Cemetery and where John and Lexer spent most of their remaining days.
